127 drunk driving cases registered

Mumbai: Despite the police issuing warning to citizens asking them not to drink and drive while celebrating New Year’s Eve, 127 such cases were registered by 9 pm on Sunday.

Apart from this,  3,900 speeding cases were registered as well as 2,900 miscellaneous cases. Around 35,000 police personnel were deployed in the city to prevent any untoward incidents.

Officers said several measures were put in place to ensure peaceful New Year’s celebrations. Several stretches of roads were designated as no-parking zones while a ban on flying objects had been enforced.

According to the traffic department, the exact amount recovered from drunken drivers has not yet been calculated, as the final amount may be determined only after the court procedures are completed. However, according to an officer, every individual who is caught for drunken driving is charged a minimum fine of Rs 2,000 as a depository amount and the magistrate decides the final fine.

Marine Drive, Juhu Chowpatty and Madh Island, among other places.
