West Bengal: Teacher hits boy with water pipe

On Tuesday, Mr Sarkar found the student joking with his classmate when he went to take his class after the tiffin-hour.

Kolkata: A Class 6 student suffered injuries after he was mercilessly beaten up with a water-pipe by a teacher at a school in Sreerampore in Hooghly. His family has lodged a complaint with the Sreerampore police station against the accused: Mr Tikendranath Sarkar who teaches history. The incident took place at Malina Lahiri Boys Academy.

On Tuesday, Mr Sarkar found the student joking with his classmate when he went to take his class after the tiffin-hour. Suddenly Mr Sarkar picked the water-pipe of fibre and started beating him in front other students.

The Class 6 student suffered deep injuries on his right leg. Returning home he narrated the ordeal to his parents. According to him, Mr Sarkar threatended to hand him a transfer certificate. His mother said that he was so traumatised that he was asking the teacher to not to beat him during his sleep.

The injured student also refused to go to school. Acting on his family's complaint a police team visited the school and spoke to some of his classmates and the teachers. Later, Mr Sarkar was called to the Sreerampore police station where he was questionned before he was allowed to go.

He admitted that he indeed beat the student to punish him but claimed that his intention was to not to injure him. The school's headmaster Shyamal Kanti Kar condemned the incident. He informed that the incident would be taken up for scrutiny at the school's managing committee meeting.
