Berhampore: The exodus in the state Congress continues as another party MLA from Murshidabad joined the Trinamul Congress on Monday in wake of the ruling party’s growing success and further erosion in the opposition party’s votebank in the panchayat elections.

In presence of state transport minister Suvendhu Adhikary Ashis Marjit, the Khargram MLA and state Congress SC/ST cell convenor, joined the ruling party on the occasion of an Iftaar party in Khargram Kishan Mandi.

Mr Adhikary handed over the Trinamool flag to Mr Marjit at the event. With Mr Marjit’s switch-over, four Congress MLAs so far have left the Congress and joined the Trinamul.

Earlier, Rabiul Alam Choudhury of Rejinagar, Sayani Sinha Roy of Murshidbad and Apurba Sarkar of Kandi joined the Trinamul.

Jubiliant over Mr Marjit’s joining the ruling party Mr Adhikary, who has been tasked by chief minister Mamata Banerjee to build the party’s organisation in the district, urged the Trinamul rank and file to try whole-heartedly to wrest three MP seats in Murshidabad from the Congress and Trinamul.

He blamed state Congress president Adhir Choudhury’s double standards for the exodous in the Congress in Murshidabad. On one hand, the Congress MP of Berhmapore came close to the CPI(M) while on the other he met union health minister, Mr Adhikary claimed alleging that the people of Murshidabad have stopped believing Mr Choudhury for his so called pseudo-secular image.
