Kolkata: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) chairman Anil D. Sahasrabudhe on Saturday said that India required a strategy for enhancing quality in all educational institutes and creating competition so that at least 10 to 20 of them appeared in the global top-100 list.

“India needs to devise a strategy to enhance quality in all institutes and create competition. We need to put in constant effort to challenge and create models of excellence in education so that at least 10-20 institutes appear among the top-100 institutes,” Mr Sahasrabudhe said at the annual convocation of Jadavpur University.

He said that the National Institutional Ranking Framework was a baby-step in that direction.

“We need to build strong and world-class graduate schools, leading to research,” he added.

There are 50,000-plus private and government colleges, and 780-plus universities in India. Last year, India produced 21,830 PhDs.

Mr Sahasrabudhe said this number helped in creating access and equity in higher education to a great extent. But the quality of education was much below expectations in most universities, except a few, he added.
