Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday said her fight against demonetisation would continue and accused the Narendra Modi government of resorting to “vendetta politics” after Trinamul Congress’ parliamentary party leader in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandopadhyay was summoned by the CBI for questioning in connection with the Rose Valley chit fund scam.

“Why is BJP govt doing vendetta politics? Our party LS leader got 3 calls from CBI. Nothing will deter us from fight against #DeMonetisation”, the TMC supremo said in a statement.

She further said, “I read that new rules were announced today also. Every day a decision is changed it means this is an unstable government”. “Imagine the situation in an area where there is no bank! There is cash crunch as well as bank crunch,” she added.

Sources said the CBI’s move came after the agency’s special investigation team discovered Mr Bandopadhyay’s name in a transaction, which it now wants the leader to clarify.

Mr Bandopadhyay has been told to appear at the CBI office in CGO Complex either on Wednesday or Thursday, sources said.

Sources revealed that the senior MP from North Kolkata informed the chief minister soon after getting the calls from the CBI. TMC sources said Mr Bandopadhyay won’t immediately act on the summons.

The CBI had first contacted Mr Bandopadhyay on November 13. Inspector B. Ghoshal had reportedly sent him an SMS seeking his email ID so that a notice could be sent to him. He had last month informed the CBI that he would not be able to appear as he would be busy attending the Winter Session of Parliament.

Mr Bandopadhyay said he has received three calls from the CBI. “I called them (CBI) back. They said you have to come to our office,” Mr Bandopadhyay, who is also the chairman of Railway Standing Committee, said.

Refuting the TMC’s charge of vendetta politics, BJP asked why is TMC afraid of CBI investigation if it has done nothing wrong and urged it to cooperate.

“CBI is an autonomous body. Bandopadhyay should cooperate with CBI investigation. It is TMC’s duty to do so. Instead of crying vendetta politics to gain sympathy, the party should cooperate with the probe,” BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh said.
