4 killed as ex-MLA's son crashes his car

Five hit workers critical, accused absconding.

Kolkata: Four workers, including two young women, were mowed down by a car allegedly driven by a former CPI(M) MLA’s son in drunken state in Burdwan
East on Friday evening. The accused, Hamidullah Choudhury alias Papai, is absconding. He is the son of former CPI(M) MLA of Monteshwar, Choudhury
Mohammed Hedayetullah. He has been booked by the police in a case on rash driving charge.

The police arrested Hamidullah’s friend, Mohammed Syed, who was injured along with five others in the road accident, and has been admitted to a hospital. The killer car, a white Swift Dzire, was impounded by the police. Syed however revealed that Hamidullah was driving the car in drunken state. According to him, he and Hamidullah went to a dhaba at Nabadwip in Nadia where they consumed alcohol.

At around 8 pm the car, while running at a high speed, first dashed a motorcyclist on Memari-Katwa Road near Kusumgram. “When an angry mob chased the car,
Hamidullah increased the speed to escape,” Syed said. On the way, the car however hit a stationary tractor, loaded with paddy, near Joyrampul at Memari. The
collision sent the tractor down a waterbody. The car was also damaged.

Local Trinamul Congress MLA Saikat Panja alleged, “Hamidullah was driving the car at a speed beyond 100 km per hour. It was his rash driving which claimed so many lives.” The tractor had come from Jharkhand with a group of nine workers who were on the road during the accident.

The injured were rushed to Monteshwar health centre where two female workers Johani Murmu (20) and Sanjli Kaling (21) were declared brought dead.
