Woman judge manhandled during immersion of idols

Kolkata: A woman judge was verbally and physically abused by a group of members of a puja committee at Chandannagore in Hooghly on Sunday afternoon during the immersion of Goddess Jagatdhatri idols in the river.

The victim, Chandrani Chakraborty, is the third judicial magistrate of the Chandannagore Court. She was acting as the additional chief judicial magistrate on Sunday. The judge left her residence on GT Road at around 2.30 pm to go to the court.

While travelling in an official car, her husband and two security personnel accompanied her. Ms Chakraborty was however got stuck in a massive jam due to immersion processions.

The two security personnel got down and tried to clear the way ahead for her car to pass through. Suddenly a group of members of Mankundu Notunpara Puja Committee, allegedly in a drunken state, gheraoed the judge’s car and verbally abused her driver.

When the driver told them that the judge was inside, they turned the heat on her. One of them, wearing a yellow dress, even opened the door and allegedly tried to drag her out on the road.

Ms Chakraborty’s security personnel rushed to the spot and rescued her. More cops from Chandannagore police station reached there and escorted her car. The judge later lodged a complaint with the police.
