Classmate denies tiffin, girl kills self
Kolkata: A Class 6 student committed suicide at home on Monday evening, apparently in humiliation following a tiff with her classmate over having tiffin in school. In a suicide note the deceased, Shrestha Dey, wrote that she took her life because of her friend. The authorities of Jodhpur Girls School, where she studied, claimed that Shrestha had told her classmates that she would end her life.
The 11-year-old was found hanging at the first floor of her home on Dr A.K. Pal Road in Paranshree at around 9.30 pm, said deputy commissioner of police (south west) Meeraj Khalid. She had hanged herself with the help of a dupatta from the ceiling fan when she was alone in between 8 pm and 9.15 pm.
According to her family members, she did not take tiffin to school on Tuesday and asked for a share from her friend who denied it. They claimed that some guardians also teased her for not bringing tiffin. Returning home Shrestha narrated everything to her family. Her mother and elder sister had gone out to the nearby market to buy some items, locking the main gate from outside when the incident took place.
The body was found after they returned. Shrestha was declared brought dead at Vidyasagar State General Hospital. A suicide note was found in the girl’s school bag on Tuesday morning. The cops found that Shrestha blamed one of her friends for the drastic step. Classes have been suspended by the school authorities in the section in which Shrestha was a student.
