Kolkata: A day after the murders of three Trinamul Congress workers in South 24 Parganas, another activist of the ruling party was gunned down in Purulia on Friday.

In the morning Hamid Ansari (55), a district committee member of the Trinamul, was travelling to Raghunathpur from Adra riding a motorcycle. At around 11 am he reached a railway gate at Mishirdih.

He was waiting for the gate to open. Suddenly a gang of miscreants opened fire on him. A total of nine rounds was fired, according to sources. Ansari fell down from his two-wheeler while his assailants fled. He died at the spot. Cops of the Adra police station rushed to the spot and recovered the body which was sent for post-mortem at Deben Mahato Hospital.

Sniffer dog was pressed by the police for clues later. Ansari was a resident of Daspara in Ranguni village. He was earlier Adra Block secretary of the Trinamul Youth Congress.

Although preliminary investigation hinted of a faction feud, the police is hunting for evidence. A case was initiated on murder charge under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code at Adra police station.

Trinamul district secretary of Purulia Nabendu Mahal said that Ansari was associated with the party for a long time. The murder took place on a day the second phase of panchayat board formation was scheduled in the district. Meanwhile 11 persons were arrested in the killings of three Trinamul workers at Joynagar in South 24 Parganas as the criminal investigation department (CID) took over the case from the district police.

The list included Manirul, Nazrul Gazi, Abdul Gaffar Mollah, Shahzamal Laskar and Ashish Haldar, sources revealed. Abdul is the brother of Trinamul leader Abu Kahar Mollah. The CID’s bomb disposal squad officials detonated some bombs at a ground. As the investigation progresses, an internal feud of the Trinamul is gradually becoming prominent.

The CID suspect that Trinamul MLA Bishwanath Das was the target of attackers who however did not know that the car they fired upon had already dropped him to another place.
