Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a young scientist who apparently fell off the seventh floor at the campus of Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in New Alipore on Monday evening.  His family has lodged a complaint of murder with the police.

The scientist, Arpan Parui (32), was found lying in a pool of blood in the lawn of the ZSI at around 6.30 pm.

He was last seen when he was working on his laptop at his seventh-floor office in the 10-storeyed building, sources said. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

On Tuesday, Arpan’s family lodged a complaint with the police alleging that he was murdered at his workplace.

No one has been named in the complaint as an accused, sources disclosed.

Arpan had joined the ZSI recently and was known about his interests in writing a book on the ants of West Bengal.

A forensic team has inspected the spot. The cops have questioned Arpan’s colleagues and family members to get clues about his death. Preliminary investigation revealed that Arpan’s laptop was open at the time of his death. It has been seized for examination.

The police suspects that Arpan fell through the large windows at the seventh floor. Whether he was pushed to death or he jumped off or he fell accidentally is not clear to the police.

The CCTV footage of the ZSI campus will also be examined by the police.
