Kolkata: The Midnapore police on Thursday evening claimed to have detained five persons in connection with the shootout that killed two persons inside Trinamul Congress party office in Kharagpur. The police has also recovered the vehicle used by the miscreants to reach the party office and fleeing after committing the crime.

The family of the deceased alleged on Friday that the murder was the fallout of the rivalry with one Basab Rambabu. From a trusted lieutenant of  Ram Babu in Kharagpur, Srinu had become a don by controlling the network of theft of railway parts apart from his role in various other crime.

Chairman of Kharagpur municipality Pradip Sarkar blamed BJP MLA and state president Dilip Ghosh for the killing. “He makes inflammatory statements whenever the he visits Kharagpur. He tries to foment riots and violence. He had reportedly made threatening statements against him,” he claimed.

Rejecting his charge, national BJP secretary Rahul Sinha said BJP does not believe in politics of murder and mayhem. “The people did not elect Mr Sarkar chairman of the municipality. He assumed office with the help of gangsters and anti-social elements. The murder in TMC office was a result of mixing crime with politics,” he said.

Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh dared the state administration to recommend a CBI probe into the killing and alleged that the state had become a “safe haven” for criminals under the TMC rule. “I challenge them (the state government) to go for a CBI probe into the murder. Everything will be clear then,” he said.

Srinivas Naidu alias Srinu (27) and his associate V. Dharma (25) were gunned down while three others were shot at by a gang of armed miscreants on Wednesday afternoon. Srinu, who had past criminal records, was the husband of Trinamul Congress councillor of ward no 18 Puja Naidu of the Kharagpur Municipality.
