Kolkata: Emboldened by the BJP’s defeat in the Assembly elections in three states: Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday affirmed that the “semifinal” has shown the door to saffron party ahead of the “final match”, the Lok Sabha Elections in 2019.

She also described it as the “people’s verdict” while calling the public as “man of the match”. The West Bengal chief minister who is now in New Delhi tweeted, “People voted against BJP. This is the people’s verdict and victory of the people of this country.”

Lashing out at the BJP, she said, “Victory of democracy and victory against injustice, atrocities, destruction of institutions, misuse of agencies, no work for poor people, farmers, youth, Dalits, SC, ST, OBC, minorities and general caste. Semifinal proves that BJP is nowhere in all the states.”

Referring to the Lok Sabha elections next year, Ms Banerjee noted, “This is a real democratic indication of 2019 final match. Ultimately, people are always the ‘man of the match’ of democracy. My congrats to the winners.”

There is another reason for joy to Ms Banerjee who is trying to stich unity among the Opposition parties to tackle the BJP. This was also perhaps the first time when her prediction about the BJP’s poor performance in the elections came true.

On November 27, Ms Banerjee had claimed at a rally of Hindi Bhashi Sammelan in Purulia that the BJP would be washed away in Rajasthan. She also observed that the BJP would not fare well in Madhya Pradesh.

“Ask anyone in Rajasthan, no one supports the BJP which is in power at the Centre. The BJP will lose totally in Rajasthan. I have heard the BJP is in bad shape in Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh. All hear they would go out of power,” she had told the rally.
