Supreme Court to hear BJP’s fresh plea on rural polls today
Describing it as a “colourable exercise of power” by the SEC at the behest of the Mamata Banerjee government.
New Delhi: Within a day of the Supreme Court refusing to interfere in the panchayat polls in West Bengal, the State unit of the BJP moved a fresh application questioning the notification of the state election commission rescinding its decision to extend the date of filing of nominations till Tuesday.
A bench of chief justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Kanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud agreed to list the application for hearing on Wednesday a ‘mention’ made by Counsel Aishwarya Bhati at 2 pm about the SEC’s decision to withdraw the notification. Describing it as a “colourable exercise of power” by the SEC at the behest of the Mamata Banerjee government, the BJP urged the court to protect the right of its candidates to enable them to collect and deposit the nomination forms and to participate in the Panchayat Elections which are scheduled for May 1, 3 and 5 in West Bengal.
According to the application pursuant to the apex court direction on Monday to the state election commission to deal with the apprehensions of the opposition with regard to the alleged preventing of filing nominations, at 6 pm.
