Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the city police commissioner to decide within 24 hours an application seeking permission for RSS rally on January 14 to be addressed by its chief Mohan Bhagwat.

Sardul Singh Jain, a Sangh pracharak, moved the high court on Wednesday on behalf of RSS, claiming that police authorities had not yet acted on their application that was submitted on December 29.

The petitioner sought a direction to Kolkata Police authorities to give permission for holding the rally at Bhukailash Road in Kidderpore area in south-western part of the city on January 14.

Appearing for RSS, counsel Anindya Mitra submitted that by not acting on their application for the rally scheduled on January 14, Kolkata Police authorities were impinging on the fundamental rights of people on freedom of expression.

Justice Joymalyo Bagchi directed the Kolkata Police chief to consider the application in accordance with law and take a decision within 24 hours and communicate it forthwith.

The rally is scheduled to be addressed by RSS supremo Bhagwat and the petitioner stated that it was amenable to holding the rally at either Bhukailash Road or at Brigade Parade Ground in the heart of the city.
