Kolkata: In what appears to be a new chapter in Indo-Bangla military relations a batch of 10 students: six girls and four boys from various army schools in Bangladesh toured Eastern Command headquarters: Fort William from February 5-9.

Led by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Jubayer Rahman Akhand, the Bangladeshi delegation also included two teachers and two army officers. They also visited other important places: Victoria Memorial, Park Street, Science City and the Hooghly river cruise.

Their visit came under the provisions of a memorandum of understanding signed between the armies of the two countries on December 12 last year, said Wing Commander SS Birdi, Eastern Command spokesperson. It was in reciprocation to the visit by 10 students of Army Public School, Kolkata to military bases in Bangladesh from January 16–19 this year.

On Thursday, the Bangladeshi delegation visited the Army Public School, Kolkata, which organised a brief cultural programme to showcase the talent of students from both sides.

Lt Col Jubayer said, “We selected ten children from various Army schools from all over Bangladesh and we are happy that they have learnt a lot during this tour and would carry back fond memories to Bangladesh.”

On February 7 the delegation interacted with the Eastern Army Commander Lieutenant General Abhay Krishna at Fort William.

He said, “It is very important that the children learn how the two armies are performing the national task of enhancing bilateral relations. They need to develop a good understanding of these aspects that will help them tomorrow when they grow up to become leaders.”
