Kolkata: An infant was killed in a road accident in Baranagar on Tuesday afternoon. The one-and-half-an-year-old boy, Rajdeep Sardar, was in the lap of his mother  Rinki Sardar who was travelling in an auto-rickshaw towards home at Bireshwarpara in Noapara after buying household items from Bangalakshmi More.

The three-wheeler was moving towards Pramod Nagar from Tobin Road. While taking a turn from B.T. Road to Akshay Mukherjee Road the boy suddenly got down from his mother’s lap as she was busy in managing the bagful of items. The boy, however, lost balance as the auto was speeding, and was flung off the vehicle at Bibek More. The auto also came to a grinding halt as passers by rushed to the spot. Rajdeep was rushed to Baranagar State General Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

A case has been initiated by the police on rash driving charges. The auto driver, Bhola Dutta, fled with his vehicle. The auto-route secretary Sandip De later said that the offending driver has been asked to surrender to the police.
