West Bengal Governor in hospital after nasal bleeding stable
The octogenarian was rushed to the hospital at around 7.30 am and was admitted in the ICU.
Kolkata: West Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi was admitted at a private hospital in Minto Park after he started bleeding from his nose at Raj Bhavan on Sunday morning. The octogenarian was rushed to the hospital at around 7.30 am and was admitted in the ICU. He is now stable but the doctors will keep him under observation through out the day and night. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited him in the evening. The governor will have a minor operation during the night.
The state government has cancelled the oath taking ceremony of Chandrima Bhattacharjee and Ujjal Biswas that was scheduled to be held at Raj Bhavan on Monday.
“The two were to be sworn in as ministers by the governor at the event in presence of chief minister Mamata Banerjee. But the programme has been called off due to the governor’s illness,” an official in the information and cultural affairs department said. The probable date for the ceremony will be on May 15.
The private hospital immediately formed a medical team headed by internal medicine specialist Dr Rahul Jain for supervising the governor’s treatment. The other three doctors from the hospital who are part of the medical team includes ENT surgeon Dr. B. Dhanuka and Dr Sayan Ganguly, consultant anaesthesiologist Dr Tapas Chakraborty. Dr Arunabha Sengupta, ENT surgeon of SSKM Hospital, who is also a member of the team, visited the hospital in the afternoon and examined the governor.
A medical bulletin stated that the governor was admitted with severe Epistaxis (nose bleed). “He was found to have active bleeding from deviated nasal septum with nasal spur in left nostril with sinusitis. Known case of hypertension with diabetes with coronary artery disease on aspirin. Aspirin causes blood thinning and increases bleeding tendency,” the bulletin stated.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital and spoke with the medical team and the CEO of the hospital and took stock of the governor’s health condition. State education minister Partha Chatterjee and Left Front Legislature party leader Sujan Chakraborty also visited the hospital
The governor, being the Chancellor, was also slated to attend the convocation at Rabindra Bharati University on Monday. “He would not be able to attend because of his ill health. However, the programme will be presided over by our vice- chancellor,” a top RBU official said.
