Kolkata: A youth was arrested by a Mumbai police team in East Midnapore for allegedly stalking cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar’s young daughter Sara for marriage.

Debkumar Maity (32), the accused, also verbally abused and threatened to abduct her. He is a college drop-out. He earns his living by drawing sketches part-time.

In past couple of months, the accused had made around 20 calls to Sara on the landline of Sachin’s residence in Bandra and stalked her with his proposal, according to preliminary investigations. The last call was found on December 2.

Sachin lodged a complaint at the Bandra police station on December 5.

The cops traced the tower location of the mobile number, used to make the calls, at Andulia in Mahishadal where Debkumar stays with his mother and one brother. On Saturday a team of cops from the Bandra police station came to Mahishadal police station.

At night Debkumar was arrested from his residence by them with the help of district police during a joint raid, said additional superintendent of police (Haldia) Samsuddin Ahmed. His cellphone was seized also. After his arrest the cops were, however, stumbled upon to find Sara’s name written with his on his right hand during interrogation.

A diary, which was recovered from his home, revealed his imagination about Sara. In one of the pages Debkumar even described her as his wife, sources disclosed. Debkumar admitted to the police for making the calls to Sara. Sources revealed that he stayed in Mumbai for five years to work on designing thermocol items.

During his stay there, he collected the telephone number of Sachin’s residence. His family members described him as mentally unstable. They said that Debkumar’s father died one and half months ago due to his abnormal behaviour at home.

According to them, Debkumar was undergoing treatment for last eight years. A local resident Tarun Maity said, “None of us could imagine he would cause an incident.”

On Sunday morning Debkumar, after he was taken out of the Mahishadal police station, told the media, “I love her since 2011. I want to marry her. I fell for her since I saw her on TV sitting at the pavilion during a match. I got her landline number from a relative in Mumbai. I made the calls nearly 20 times. But I have not seen her in person ever.”

He was later produced at the Haldia Court which has granted three days’ transit remand to the Mumbai police team to take him to Mumbai and produce at a court there.
