Congress asks governor to intervene

Kolkata: Apprehending violence by the ruling Trinamul Congress in the municipal areas where polls are scheduled to be held on May 14, the state Congress on Saturday sought the intervention of governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, urging him to instruct the state government to take suitable action.

A delegation led by state Congress general secretary Omprakash Mishra met the governor and submitted a deputation demanding free and fair civic polls. The Congress stated that law and order situation was deteriorating in the state and also in areas like Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur and Domkal in Murshidabad.

Two of the areas where civic polls will be held, were the worst hit. “Nominees of the opposition political parties contesting the elections are intimidated and their campaigns are being thwarted. The police has taken no punitive measures in spite of complaints,” Mr Mishra said.

He alleged that common people were being threatened of dire consequences if they attended any public meeting organised by the Opposition. “The governor has given a patient hearing and said that he would intervene,” a senior Congress leader said.
