Kolkata: A young businessman from south Kolkata lost his life and his friend’s daughter was critically injured after the brand new Ferrari sports car he was driving at a speed allegedly over 150 km per hour lost control, turned turtle and fell down from a flyover in Howrah on Sunday morning.

Shibaji Roy, the victim in his forties, was a resident of Trinagular Park off Rasbehari Avenue in Gariahat. His friend’s daughter Ashna Surana (18) has been admitted to Calcutta Medical Research Institute with mutiple injuries. Her condition is critical.

The Class 12 student appeared in the annual examination this year.

Sibaji, who was passionate for cars, bought the sports car barely two months ago for `3.5 crores, according to his friends who formed a group with their high-end racing cars which they used to take out for long drives on weekends on the outskirts of the city.

He already had around 10 luxurious cars which include Land Rover, Jaguar and Mercedes at home, they said. Shibaji was the director of M L Roy & Co Sanitations Pvt Ltd.

On Sunday morning he drove his wife and son to have breakfast at an eatery in Gurap of Hooghly. His friend also accompanied them driving his car, a Lambhorghini, with his daughter. After having the breakfast they left for home in the city. Shibaji was driving his Ferrari taking his son in his car, the police learnt. His wife, friend and Ashna were returning home in Lambhorghini.

On way Ashna wanted to experience a ride in Shibaji’s car, sources disclosed adding that the two cars halted at a place where Shibaji’s son got down and boarded the Lambhorghini to join his mother. Ashna took the seat next to Shibaji who resumed driving.

When they reached Pakuria flyover on National Highway 6 at Salap in Domjur area sometime after 10 am from Dankuni, their car lost control due to overspeeding and continued to move ahead hitting the road divider before colliding with a portion of the railing, preliminary investigation revealed.

The car turned turtle at least six times before falling from the flyover down on the road, eye-wtinesses said. The impact was so high that a concrete wall, a part of the flyover, developed crack. Shibaji and Ashna were profusely bleeding while the car got mangled. Local residents rushed to the spot but they failed to take out them.

Gas-cutter was used later for their rescue. Shibaji was declared brought dead at a private hospital in the city. Rejecting the allegations of overspeeding his friend Indrajit Dutta said, “He was very skilled in driving high-end cars. He also drove Harley Davidson and many others carefully. How it happened is not clear to us. We are indeed in a shock.”

He mentioned that Shibaji was a teetotaler.

Superintendent of police (Howrah Rural) Gaurav Sharma said, “An investigation is underway into the accident.” The mangled car which was removed by a giant crane in the afternoon will undergo forensic test on Monday.
