Kolkata: West Bengal has achieved the highest percentage (91 per cent) of enrolment in GST through the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) among the states in India till date, while Kolkata ranks third among Indian cities in GST enrolment. This was informed by principal commissioner of service tax (Kolkata Commissionerate) Bijay Kumar on Wednesday.

Mr Kumar presented the data at the inaugural session of a two-day CII seminar — GST Training Programme on Transition to GST Implementation — to around 100 industry members. According to data available with the CII, VAT migration in West Bengal looks impressive at 86.6 per cent.

It also elaborated that Kolkata ranks third among all the cities in the number of GST enrolment, the first and second cities being Ahmedabad and Mysore respectively. Mr Kumar mentioned that GST will be efficient and technology-driven.

“Dual GST in India will consist of Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). In place of Central Sales Tax (CST) there will be IGST which will be known as Integrated Tax,” he said.
