New Delhi: For once, both AAP and Congress were on the same page in congratulating the newly-appointed former senior bureaucrat Anil Baijal as the new lieutenant-governor of Delhi.

While Delhi tourism minister Kapil Mishra said he was hopeful of cooperation from Mr Baijal, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken said the newly-appointed L-G should bring into public domain the three-member inquiry committee report, headed by former CAG V.K. Shunglu, which had probed the irregularities of the AAP government’s decision related to policy and governance in the national capital. Mr Baijal will take over the official charge on Saturday.

A day after President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Mr Baijal as the Delhi L-G, Mr Mishra on Thursday said: “I welcome his (Mr Baijal’s) appointment. I am hopeful that the new L-G will clear several development projects of the government which have been stopped. Hopefully the blockade will end now.”

Welcoming Mr Baijal’s appointment, which came a week after former L-G Najeeb Jung resigned on December 22, Mr Maken said that he hoped Mr Baijal would be “impartial in his dealings” and will release the Shunglu Comm-ittee report that reportedly criticises the Kejriwal government for its “irregularities”. “We expect Anil Baij-al to release the Shunglu Committee report on corruption of the AAP government soon after taking over!” Mr Maken tweeted. The Shunglu Committee investigated the alleged irregularities committed by the AAP government.

BJP national secretary R.P. Singh said he was hopeful that being a senior bureaucrat, Mr Baijal will follow the constitutional guidelines. “Fight between Mr Jung and the AAP government was not personal. He only followed constitutional steps which were opposed by the Delhi government,” Mr Singh added.

A 1969 batch Indian Administrative Service officer, Mr Baijal was in the executive council of the think-tank Vivek-ananda International Foundation. He retired in 2006 as the Union urban development secretary. In his long career of 37 years, he held several eminent positions.
