New Delhi: Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patnaik carried out night patrolling across the city on Friday. As many as 6,000 police personnel had been deployed and about 600 pickets had been put up for the police chief’s patrolling. As many as 16,000 vehicles were checked during the patrolling.

During the “general gasht” across the city all senior officers, including the commissioner, spl commissioner (Law and order) inspected the deployment and alertness of the staff and even inspected the vulnerable stretches, including those which had recently reported crime; and assessed the possibility of enhancing police visibility to prevent recurrence of crime. The officers also identified the stretches which required re-arrangement of deployment to plug thegaps.

Nearly 3000 persons were bound down, while 185 persons were checked for legal action.

The General Gasht is a regular and routine exercise in policing, where senior officers interact with field functionaries to check their alertness and to have better understanding and to devise further strategies for curbing crime.

It is also intended to boost the motivation and morale of night checking staff, keeping in mind the fact that they perform tough duties in odd hours. The high visibility and intensity of checking also instill confidence in the minds of the people and act as a deterrent against anti-social elements moving in the night to commit any unlawful act.
