New Delhi: Criticising the Delhi government over death of a Rohini resident in a road accident in Civil Line area of Delhi due to a porthole, Leader Of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta on Saturday said such casualties often take place in one or other parts of the city. He claimed that over 50 people died last year due to such fatal accidents.

Mr Gupta said that it was, however, unfortunate that government has not learnt any lesson from such accidents. Mr Gupta has demanded a compensation of `50 lakh for the family of late Jagdish Sukhija, who the leader said “lost his life due to negligence of the Delhi government”.

According to Mr Gupta, once the roads are constructed, no attention is paid by the government for their regular maintenance. He said had the government taken timely action for repair of the pothole on the road in Civil Lines area, near Metcalf House, the precious life of Mr Sukhija businessmen, a resident of Rohini, could have been saved.

Mr Gupta has demanded a high-level inquiry into the death of Sukhija and strict action to be taken against those found guilty. “Last year in the month of May, a seven year-old-boy had died by falling in a drain along the road in Rani Bagh area. The major reasons for such road accidents is use of low quality material for construction, faulty road engineering or design, non-repair of portholes in time, failure to re-carpet roads in time, etc,.,” Mr Gupta added.

Mr Gupta also demanded that the Arvind Kejriwal government conduct a thorough survey of all roads, open drains, open main holes to find out shortcomings.
