New Delhi: Two policemen posted at New Usmanpur police station in northeast Delhi have been suspended from the duty and later arrested along with three other accused for allegedly abducting and demanding Rs 1 lakh as ransom from a man accused in several criminal cases, the police said on Saturday.

Head constable Jitender Dutt Sharma and constable Mohit Malik were arrested and dismissed from service with immediate effect on Friday.

The accused abducted a person and demanded the money from his wife as ransom, they said.

Three other accused Attar Hassan, Istkhar and Vijay Kumar were also arrested.

Confirming the incident deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Atul Kumar Thakur said that the matter came to the fore after the man’s wife registered a complaint on July 26.

The complainant alleged that the policemen demanded Rs 1 lakh from her husband. The reason for the extortion bid is yet to be ascertained, the police said.

They are currently in judicial custody, Mr Thakur said.

The police added that the man, a resident of Harsh Vihar, has over seven criminal cases of snatching and theft registered against him.
