Rs 175 crore allocated for CCTVs, Rs 10 crore for self-defence training to girls.
New Delhi: The Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) of the AAP government has approved the proposal for the construction of a school, worth Rs 36 crore, in South Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area.
The school, which will be constructed within a year, will provide a major relief to thousands of students who had so far been attending classes in the government schools in South Delhi’s Saket, Chittaranjan Park, Ambedkar Nagar, and Malviya Nagar areas.
The newly-constructed school will be able to accommodate as many as 5,000 students. The maintenance of the school, which will be constructed in C-Block of Sangam Vihar, will be looked after by the Public Works Department (PWD) for a period of one year.
Sources said that the EFC has approved Rs 27 crore for the construction of the building; Rs 0.57 crore for the development of the school complex; Rs 3.51 crore for furniture; and Rs 4.95 crore for other miscellaneous works.
The government’s decision to set up school in the congested Sangam Vihar area is in line with its pre-poll promise to upgrade the overall education sector in the city.
This year, the government had already allocated about Rs 14,000 crore to the education sector, which is about 26 per cent of the city’s total Budget. In the Budget for the fiscal year 2017-18, about 23.5 per cent of the total budget was allocated to the education sector.
The government had also allocated Rs 175 crore for installation of CCTV cameras in schools. It had allocated Rs 10 crore for imparting self-defence training to the girl students and Rs 20 crore for promotion of sports in schools.
Last year, the AAP government had inaugurated about 6,000 newly-constructed classrooms in the government schools, thus making it the biggest expansion of school infrastructure in the city. Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who himself holds the education portfolio, has himself been making surprise inspections to schools to see whether teachers were attending classes on a regular basis or not.
