New Delhi: Blending art with science in a bid to improve the overall look, two government schools are in the process to adorn a new look backed by innovations. The two schools are situated in Faridabad-Badarpur border and South Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar.

From making exquisite furniture out of discarded material to tackling the age-old problem of truancy in a methodical manner, the remodelled schools have everything. The principals of the schools, from Molarband and Dakshinpuri Extension, shared the news at a “SharEd” event titled “Small Innovations Go a Long Way” organised by Creatnet Education on Friday.

Principal of GBSS School No.2 in Molarband, Dr Khaleeq Ahmad, was transferred to the school two years ago, which is situated on the Faridabad-Badarpur border and has a semi-rural and immigrant population. With Mr Ahmad’s innovative tactics, the school with a strength of 3,000 students and once in shambles, has been infused with new lease of life making it one of the best government schools in the area.

As a part of innovation, the principal has merged all the classroom sections into one class, where one teacher teaches and the other teacher sits at the back. “I personally check all the the students’ notebooks once in a year and sign it. When I joined the school, it lacked sitting arrangements and in today’s time we have over 600 desks. We now tackle truancy problem by calling parents and taking their signatures and secondly mark attendance of students going out,” Mr. Ahmad said.

On the other hand, Mythili Bector, who took charge as principal of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya Dakshinpuri Extn.in 2015, brought the school on par with her strict attitude yet flexible behaviour. Ms Bector introduced a puppet theatre in the school as a part of curriculumm, where puppets are made using scraps like broken rods and frames. The school does not throw or sell them, but reuses them by creating something new. She helps the tiny tots adjust better to school life by allowing parents with them for the first ten days.

“A school where drug abuses, gambling, mafia influence and alcoholism were regular incidents, today it is a school with zero truancy. A school where teachers were being beaten up, today it is the best when it comes to no cheating in exams,” added Ms. Bector.
