New Delhi: Giving impetus to security in the national capital and to combat terror strikes, the Delhi police has inducted National Security Guard (NSG) trained drivers and commandos in the PCR units. These PCRs will be placed at vulnerable spots.

The “Parakram” vans will be stationed at Vijay Chowk, Palika Bazar, IP Marg, Select Citywalk Mall in Saket, Vasant Kunj Mall, Pacific Mall in Subhash Nagar, Netaji Subhash Place market and mall complex, Akshardham Temple, Lotus Temple and Jhandewalan.

The city police chief, Amulya Patnaik, flagged off the first batch of Parakram vehicles on Friday from the police headquarters.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Patnaik said, “A total of 10 Parakram Vans are part of a pilot project and after realistic impact assessment, the scheme would be extended to more locations across the city in due course of time after vulnerability analysis.”

He further said that the “Parakram” vans would be located at select vulnerable and strategic points comprising high footfall areas and iconic buildings all over Delhi.

“In the light of recent terror attacks across the globe, it was decided that we should add anti-terror backup,” said Dependra Pathak, special commissioner of police (operations).

These vans will be mandated for anti-terror and other serious situations warranting armed response and will not handle the usual calls that are handled by the PCR unit.

The aim of deploying these vans is to respond to any terror attack promptly and to instill a feeling of security and safety among citizens with their visibility, said the officer.

It also strengthens the existing deployment of district police. These vans are GPRS-enabled and are fitted with pan-Delhi wireless communication.

Each van will be manned by one driver, one in-charge and three commandos. Drivers deployed on these vans will be armed with small weapons and all commandos will be armed with high firepower AK-47 rifles. The contingent of commandos will also have a fair mix of women commandos.
