New Delhi: A part of the car bumper that broke and fell after a man was allegedly hit by a high-end Audi A4 car in Central Delhi’s ITO, helped investigators solve the hit-and-run case on Monday.

The police said that initially it was a blind case because the CCTVs installed near the accident site were not night vision-enabled and the footage was not clear.

“We did not have a clear footage or any eyewitnesses to trace the driver. All that the police had was a part that fell from the bumper when the car hit the deceased,” said a senior police official.

The investigators took the car part to workshops to identify the car. “The broken part had a unique ID on it. After a scan, it was found that the part belonged to an Audi A4. After the make of the car was identified, other details of the cars, including ownership, were procured,” the police official added.

Based of the details procured, the police questioned the owner of the car and found out that he had sold the car to Rajeev Malhotra, a property dealer based in Old Delhi. The accused was detained from his house in Greater Kailash-I. The car was recovered from a local service station in Noida, where he had given it for repair. He has also confessed that while driving he was under the influence of alcohol.
