New Delhi: The CBI has arrested a superintendent of customs department for allegedly stealing around 90 kg gold from customs storeroom (malkhana) at IGI Airport around 14 years ago. The Central investigating agency had taken over the investigation, involving customs official Sanjeev Kumar, from the Delhi police after it failed to make any progress in the case.

Sanjeev is currently posted with Sonepat customs office as a superintendent. A court of chief metropolitan magistrate has remanded Sanjeev to seven days’ police custody after the probe agency told the court that he was required for the further interrogation. The court has now fixed May 28 as the next date of hearing.

According to the CBI, Sanjeev was posted at IGI Airport between 2002 and 2003 as custodian of the storeroom where seized gold items were kept. Sanjeev allegedly replaced gold with non-precious metal. The CBI said that it was easy for him to execute the crime as he was in-charge of the storeroom. Sanjeev allegedly stole around 90 kg gold by replacing it with non-precious metal.
