Water crisis: AAP MLAs protest against Haryana

DJB has moved Supreme Court, says AAP.

New Delhi: Alleging that the BJP government at Centre is meting out a stepmotherly treatment to the people of Delhi on issue of water, the Aam Aadmi Party legislators on Saturday protested against the Hrayana government outside the Haryana Bhavan.

“Haryana is not giving the water it is required to give to the national Capital. There has been an agreement between the states as all the states have the right to receive water from the rivers across the country. According to the Supreme Court order, Haryana is bound to release a set amount of water to Delhi. Over the past several months, the state has not been releasing adequate amount of water due to which several areas of the city are reeling under water crisis. Due to this, the legislators held a demonstration on Saturday,” the party said in a statement.

AAP legislator Sanjeev Jha said that Haryana is not abiding by the orders of the apex court. “This shows that it is politically motivated. This reflects the stepmotherly treatment of the BJP government towards Delhi’s public,” he said.

Party MLA Madan Lal said that the summer season has started and the demand for water is set to grow in the coming months. “Since the people here did not vote for the BJP, it is avenging its loss, which is extremely deplorable,” he said.

The party said that the Delhi Jal Board has moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to Haryana to release adequate water for Wazirabad barrage and the matter will be mentioned in the court on Monday.

“Delhi is in the midst of an acute crisis owing to stopping of water supply by Haryana,” the plea read, adding that Haryana was defying the 1996 Supreme Court order. The Delhi government officials said the matter could be mentioned in the court on March 26.
