Couple dies, kids injured in Dwarka roof collapse

Vaibhav, the eldest of the siblings, told police that the house was owned by his father and he was born there.

New Delhi: A couple died and their three children sustained injuries after the roof of their house collapsed at Hari Vihar near the Kakrola dairy area in Dwarka early on Monday morning.

The roof of a house had weakened over time owing to seepage due to rains. There was a layer of bricks on the roof to stop the water from leaking. The weak iron rods were unable to take the load and hence, the roof collapsed.

The deceased were identified as Sunil (40) and his wife Rachna (40). The injured children, Vaibhav, Gulshan and Gungun are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The family of five was buried under the debris when the roof of the one-room house in the Hari Vihar area of Dwarka collapsed around 1 am. The family was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where Sunil and Rachna were declared brought dead. The three children have been admitted to the hospital.

Vaibhav, the eldest of the siblings, told police that the house was owned by his father and he was born there.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for a post-mortem, an official said. Earlier on July 18, nine buffaloes and a calf died and four persons, including a woman, sustained injuries as the roof of a dairy farm collapsed in East Delhi’s Ghazipur.

Teams from fire and disaster management department reached the spot and took the injured and the cattle out from under the debris with the help of locals.
