New Delhi: The Academic Council of the Delhi University in its third consecutive meeting on Thursday finally approved the launching of Delhi School of Journalism and a 5-year integrated MA programme by dropping the self-financing clause.

The varsity will now be sending the proposal to UGC for approval for government funding besides asking the ministry of information and broadcasting and Prasar Bharti for infrastructural and technical aid.

The move, however, comes after several oppositions by DU teachers association (DUTA).

The AC members said that the V-C had assured that unlike private journalism institutes, the DSJ would provide reservation for students belonging to the SC/ST community and have a provision of scholarships for students belonging to economically weaker sections. However, the fee structure would also be kept low.

“For scholarships, the VC will explore philanthropic endowments from DU alumni,” Saikat Ghosh, an AC member said. The VC had proposed Rs 30,000 per semester for the five-year integrated course.
