New Delhi: As the ongoing membership drive of the BJP came to an end on Tuesday, the Delhi BJP claimed that it enrolled 15.5 lakh new members in the national capital. The co-convenor of the Delhi BJP membership drive, Harsh Malhotra, told this newspaper that 15.5 lakh new members had been enrolled by the afternoon on August 20 and the final figure by the end of the day was likely to be 16 lakh.

The BJP membership drive was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi on the birth anniversary of party ideologue Shyama Prasad Mookerjee on July 6.

In Delhi, the campaign was launched with fanfare at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium by the senior party leader and national in-charge of the campaign, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, on July 7. The month-long membership campaign was supposed to conclude on August 11, but on the directions of the central leadership it was extended till August 20.

Currently, Delhi BJP has around 26 lakh registered members, out of which over 14.5 lakh are duly verified. With the launch of the membership drive in the city, the party leadership had set a target of enrolling 10 lakh new members. Even hours before the closure of the membership drive, the Delhi BJP had enrolled an additional 5.5 lakh members than the target set initially.

“All the leaders and workers collectively worked overtime to achieve the target set at the start of the membership drive and due to everyone’s effort and hard work we are able to enrol 15.5 lakh new members. By the end of the day, we believe that an additional 50,000 new members will be enrolled. The final figure will be around 16 lakh,” Mr Malhotra said.

Before the start of the membership drive, BJP president Amit Shah had reportedly directed the Delhi unit to induct large number of new members during its membership drive in 1,250 odd booths where the saffron party had not done well during the Lok Sabha elections in the national capital.

Sources said that all the 13,000 booths were covered during the membership drive and the exact number of new members in these booths will be known in the coming days.
