New Delhi: Tension prevailed in East Delhi’s infamous Trilokpuri area on Friday following a clash between two groups on Thursday night. A heavy deployment of police has been made to prevent the situation from taking an ugly turn in the sensitive zone.

According to the police, on the intervening night of July 19 and July 20, a minor verbal spat between some kids, who were playing in the area, turned violent after youth from two different communities joined the quarrel.

According to a police officer, some kids were playing in the area near Trilokpuri Block No. 20 on Thursday. A minor scuffle erupted between them over some petty issue. Several youth from two different communities joined them and started pelting stones.

DCP (East) Pankaj Kumar Singh said, “Sensing the gravity of the incident, police teams immediately swung into action. However, the miscreants even pelted stones at the police team, which injured few of the police personnel. Heavy police deployment has been made in the area. Some miscreants even tried to give a communal colour to the tension.” Paramilitary forces have been stationed in the area and the local police has been asked to maintain a strict vigil for the next few days. Sleuths are gathering intelligence about possible bids by miscreants to disturb peace in the are.

The situation has been brought under control, said Mr Singh, assuring that strict vigil and reinforcements have been stationed in the area.

“It was a minor stone pelting incident. The situation is under control and we are on the streets maintaining tight vigil. We have arrested seven miscreants and registered a case,” said the police.

The Delhi police always keeps a close eye on the Trilokpuri area, which is considered very sensitive after the riot in 2014.

It is alleged by some locals that it will be difficult for the police to control the situation until it manages to bust illicit liquor, gambling and other illegal rackets running in the area. These illegal outfits mostly control and fund the unemployed and illiterate youth, who create nuisance in the area.
