NEW DELHI: Of the 450 cases of theft reported everyday from various parts of the city, the police was able to make recovery in only 18 cases, an abysmal four percent success rate, according to the data provided by the Delhi police for a period between January and November this year.

According to the Delhi police records, every 60 minutes over 18 incidents of theft were reported in national capital.

This year, till the end of November, 1,50,410 theft incidents were reported in the city. However, recoveries were made in only 6,934 cases for the same period — merely five per cent.

Month-wise data also revealed the cases of theft and recovery were made by Delhi police during this year are: January 14,886 (915), February 13,028 (787), March 13,979 (764), April 15,092 (745), May 16,095 (774), June 12,698 (4632), July 14,692 (742), August 14,831 (674), September 16,080 (742), October 18,560 (768), November 15,355 (479).

Delhi has a booming market for stolen items, with hundreds of shops such as the ones in Gaffar Market, Chor Bazaar, Mayapuri selling stolen items. There are several instances of the police refusing to record the complete value of the property that was lost in any crime of robbery, snatching, dacoity or house break-in.

The police, however said that over workload and shortage of manpower is one of the main reasons behind the dismal success rate in the theft cases.

The police added that soon after you lose an item, file a complaint in the nearest police station. You need to have the bill related to the item if it is available, and a photo of the valuable or the item that was stolen, which will help the cops in moving forward.
