New Delhi: A delegation of JNU teachers met President Pranab Mukherjee, who is also the Visitor of all Central universities, to apprise him of the varsity teachers’ objections on the revised ordinances for M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees.

While requesting him to suspend the ordinances with immediate effect, the teachers also communicated their distress to him over the alleged ongoing grave violations of the JNU Act, Statutes, Rules and Regulations by the JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) administration.

A memorandum was presented on the faculty’s critique, highlighting the statutory lapses that had been involved in the revisions of the ordinances. The delegation highlighted the fact that the 142nd Academic Council never approved these ordinances, and that they contained many amendments even after the EC (executive council) had passed them.

“We stressed that the ordinances were bad even as per law because they had been given retrospective effect from May 5, 2016, for students. The impact of these ordinances would therefore not only be felt by the 2016 batch, but also by students who enrolled prior to this,” the JNU Teachers’ Association president Ayesha Kidwai said. The delegation also requested his urgent intervention.
