New Delhi: A gang of burglars struck at an empty house in Shanti Niketan belonging to a French diplomat. The diplomat, Ms Anne-Laure Desjonqueres, head of the Press Section in French embassy in the national capital, learnt about the theft on last Tuesday when the family returned from Nepal.

Mr Paul Desjonqueres, the husband of the French diplomat, said in his complaint to the police that they learnt about the theft on their return on May 4. The family had been on vacation in Nepal between April 28 and May 5.

The maid, Rajani Rai, informed the family that she found the house in total disarray upon her visit next day. The kitchen window as well as the bedroom windows had been forced open. There were clear footprints on the kitchen floor. Several of the other doors had been unlocked. The chest of drawers and cupboards were ransacked. In particular, the main bedroom had been thoroughly turned over. Surprisingly though, no valuable items were found missing.

Based on the fact that there was a break in, Mr Desjonqueres has filed the police complaint.

Delhi police is probing the matter. “We are investigating the matter and will solve the case as soon as possible,” said a senior police official.
