New Delhi: Reaching IGI airport’s domestic Terminal 1D will no longer be an arduous journey. Delhi Metro is set to open the new station by May next year. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is also going to conduct a trial run from Janakpuri West to domestic airport link by the end of next week.

“DMRC is in the process of constructing a 36-km line connecting Kalindi Kunj and Noida’s Botanical Garden with JanakPuri. This line will also link the domestic airport with areas in South, West and East Delhi. Services on the corridor are expected to begin by May 2016,” said a senior DMRC official on the condition of anonymity.

The trial will start before the end of this week from Janakpuri West to the domestic airport link, which covers 13 km and six stations. A trial at the 3.9-km-Kalindi Kunj-Botanical Garden Metro link is going on and the link is expected to open by April 2017.

The said Metro station will be a part of the 36-km-long proposed Janakpuri West-Kalindi Kunj-Botanical Garden corridor and will connect the domestic airport directly from South, West, and East Delhi areas and Noida. Besides, commuters from North and Central Delhi can come to the Hauz Khas station on the existing Gurgaon line and thereafter take the train to the airport. The corridor will provide direct connectivity to the airport from South Delhi areas like Kalkaji, Nehru Place, Hauz Khas, and Munirka, among others. It will take approximately 20 minutes from Nehru Place to reach the airport.

Similarly, from Ghaziabad and East Delhi areas, the commuters can take line 3 and 4 to reach Botanical Garden. With this move, commuters will get relief from traffic chaos and can reach IGI Airport’s Terminal 1D easily. It will also be beneficial for DMRC to generate more revenue.

“It will be very beneficial for South Delhi residents going to Terminal 1-D as traffic is unpredictable and there is a high chance of missing the flight due to jam,” said Rohit Shamra, a commuter.
