New Delhi:With Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s midnight candlelight march to India Gate, all the party district offices hit the streets across the national capital in protest against the rising number of crime against women in the country. The party workers turned up in large numbers in their district offices to take part in the candlelight march to vent their anger against the recent brutal sexual assault of two juveniles.

Upping the ante on the rapes in Kathua and Unnao, Mr Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took out a candlelight march on Thursday. The midnight march was attended by thousands of people and Mr Gandhi thanked all those who participated in it.

Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken led the protest march at the Red Fort at 10 pm while senior party leaders and workers attended similar marches in all 14 districts in the city. “Atrocities against women across the country, specially in the BJP ruled states, is on the rise. The party is sleeping over such matters while its ministers and MLAs are involved which is really shameful,” Mr Maken said while addressing protesters near the Red Fort.

The Congress has been on the forefront in highlighting how the BJP refused to condemn the horrific rape cases in Jammu and UP.

On social media, Mr Gandhi accused the government of being a mute spectator.

In a hard hitting tweet, he said: “How can anyone protect the culprits of such evil? What happened is a crime against humanity. It cannot go unpunished. What have we become if we allow politics to interfere with such unimaginable brutality perpetrated on an innocent child?”
