New Delhi: In a shocking incident, five policemen were physically assaulted inside a police station by a mob of traders in East Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar area.

The accused traders were identified as Manoj Kukreja (42), Gulshan Kukreja (38), Manohar Lal (56), Sahil Taneja (22), Jatin Taneja (26), Puneet Kumar (34) and Satyadev Gupta (28). Search is on for the remaining culprits, the police said. The incident took place on Sunday after the police conducted an anti-encroachment drive in the area and seized the goods of the traders.

According to the police, amid the traders’ continued outrage over anti-encroachment and sealing drives in Delhi, a group of culprits (traders) ran amok, attacked and misbehaved with policemen after they brought the seized goods to the police station. A senior police officer on condition of anonymity said that the police was regularly conducting such drives in the area, but on Sunday, a group of eight to nine people entered the police station and started misbehaving with the staff.

When the other staff tried to intervene, the group physically assaulted, injuring five police personnel. Two sub inspectors and three constables got injured in the attack.

The police filed a case under various sections of the IPC and six people were arrested, while the remaining fled the spot fearing arrest.

The police officer further added that the police would continue to enforce law and order and added that such acts of hooliganism won’t be tolerated.

“This cowardly act will only motivate us. Even several market welfare associations are supporting us and condemn this act.”

The culprits were produced in the court, which sent them to jail. The absconding traders have been identified and they will be arrested soon, he added.
