New Delhi: In the backdrop of the recent illicit liquor case in Narela wherein a woman was attacked,  Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) summoned the deputy commissioner of the excise department on Tuesday.

He said that a woman and her husband, who were caught selling illicit liquor by the DCW in Narela, had 31 cases lodged against them in 17 years. He told the DCW that the department had a shortage of manpower and only five officers of the excise department were responsible for the entire outer district.

He said minors and women were being used by the mafia to transport illegal liquor in small vehicles through fields on the border.

Following a brutal attack on a woman who helped the DCW bust a bootlegging racket in Narela last week, the commission had summoned the deputy commissioner of police (Rohini) and the deputy commissioner, excise to get details about the action taken in the issue of liquor being sold illegally in some parts of the city.

The DCP (Rohini) sought more time to file a reply following which the DCW gave the official two days for the same. “Despite the the police being aware of the accused, no steps have been taken to check their activities. This is the reason why these persons have been operating with impunity,” he said.
