NEW DELHI: Only 32 per cent of terrorists based in Kashmir, Punjab and North-east states, who were arrested by the Delhi police special cell from January 2010 to December 2018, were convicted by various courts.

According to the data provided by the Delhi police, the special cell has arrested a total of 25 terrorists based in Kashmir, Punjab and North-east states between January 2010 and December 2018. However, only eight of them were convicted.

Data shows that 9 Kashmir-based terrorists were arrested in the national capital and only 3 were convicted.

Two Punjab-based terrorists were arrested and one was convicted, while out of 14 North-east terrorists arrested in the national capital, only four were convicted.

They wanted to strike terror in the national capital during the festivals, Republic Day and Independence Day ceremonies. Their targets were VIP areas, iconic places and vital installations.

Interrogation revealed that they were planning a major strike in the national capital.

Delhi police, Jammu & Kashmir police and Punjab police were working in tandem after they were alerted by the security agencies about terrorist outfits active in Kashmir Valley, Punjab and North-east states, sources said.

“Timely arrest of these terrorists prevented major strikes as they were planning to carry out a series of attacks across the national capital,” said the sources.
