Delhi: Most applicants for BA programme
While the BA programme has received 1,21,701 applications, 1,128,99 students have applied for English Honours this time.
New Delhi: In a surprise, Delhi University has received a huge number of applications for B.A. programme this year leaving behind English Honours, which is considered to be the most preferred course every year.
While the BA programme has received 1,21,701 applications, 1,128,99 students have applied for English Honours this time.
“These receive maximum number of applications because students believe that chances to get admission in these courses are easy unlike other courses which have specific requirements,” said a varsity official.
The programme even helps the student to prepare for civil services exam, she added.
This year, students taking admission in BA programme will gain up to 10 per cent additional points if they have studied Modern Indian Languages (MIL) such as Bengali and Tamil in school. “Only those applicants who take up MIL as a subject in BA Programme will get the benefit.
They will be given be an advantage of 10 percentage points on their ‘best four’. And secondly, they will get the benefit only in those colleges where MIL is offered,” he added.
In the science stream , Maths and Chemistry remained the most popular. However, in the last one year, Physics is also gaining popularity. The course was the third most popular this year too, with a total of 61,768 applications, following B.Sc Mathametics honours, with 64,777 applications and Chemistry honours with 63, 065 applications. “The demand for Physics Honours has surely increased over the last few years as it gives scope to students in many fields. After undergraduation, students can do masters in Applied Electronics, Geophysics, Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics from institutes and research centres like IIT, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Raman Research Institute, Physical Research Laboratory and Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Research Center,” a Physics professor said.
B.Sc Physics (Hons) is offered in 24 DU colleges, with a total of 1300 seats. Last year, SGTB Khalsa College of North Campus had declared the highest cut-off percentage at 98.33, while Hindu College and Kirori Mal College declared a 98 per cent as the first cut-off.
