New Delhi: A 10-year-old boy, Krishna, was crushed under a van in Southwest Delhi’s Palam on Thursday evening. The incident triggered protests in the area. A mob vandalised the van that hit the child and set it on fire, the police said. The driver fled leaving the vehicle behind and the police has launched a manhunt for him. There were several police personnel deployed at the accident site to ensure that the situation didn’t aggravate.

The incident took place around 4.15 pm on the Palam-Dabri road when a speeding RTV mowed down the victim. The boy, a resident of Mahavir Enclave, was dragged for a few metres by the vehicle.

“According to the locals, the driver of the vehicle fled from the spot. Locals called up the police control room and the child was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. His body has been sent for a post-mortem. We are tracing the owner of the offending vehicle and the driver will soon be arrested,” said a senior police officer.

The police is also scanning the CCTV footage from the area to establish the sequence of events leading to the accident.

After the incident a number of agitated local residents, along with the victim’s family members, arrived at the spot and vandalised the van. They also set the vehicle on fire and police personnel were deployed to control the situation.
