New Delhi: The Delhi police has arrested a gang of female thieves who had decamped with stolen diamond bangles, rings, and gold jewellery worth Rs 16 lakh.

The arrested are Rajrani alias Poonam (27) and Renu alias Mali (21). The police said that on November 22, complainant Minna Sekhri reported at the Sarita Vihar police station that she had hired two women for cleaning and dusting in the morning.

While the women were cleaning the house, the complainant went to the kitchen to prepare lunch. In the meantime, the accused stole two diamond bangles, two diamond rings, one gold ring, and Rs 70,000 cash from the almirah. Subsequently, on the pretext of rest, they went out of the house. Later, the complainant found that her jewellery and cash were missing. Both the women had worked for half an hour only in the house and the complainant had no information about their whereabouts.

Upon seeing the gravity of the incident, a team of police officials scrutinised the CCTV footages of the area and the two women were identified.

It was revealed that the accused women had hired an auto-rickshaw from Sarita Vihar Metro Station. The auto driver was identified, who informed that he had dropped them near the Anand Vihar Bus Terminal.

While the Sarita Vihar team was conducting a search in the locality, information was received that the RK Puram crime branch had arrested two women in a similar case.

During interrogation, the women confessed their involvement in the commission of the theft. They disclosed that they had handed over the stolen items to accused Rajrani’s mother. Efforts were made to recover the items but Rajrani’s mother was absconding. The accused women were taken to Bihar but the stolen goods could not be recovered as they had tried to mislead the police. The accused were then subjected to sustained interrogation and finally the stolen goods were recovered from her house in Bhuapur, Ghaziabad.
