New Delhi: In a bid to woo the voters for upcoming municipal election, political parties have begun preparations to win the confidence of more than five lakh voters in the Gurgaon.

Voting for as many as 35 wards in the Millenium City will be held on September 24. The process of counting and declaration of results will begin on the same day, after the culmination of the voting process.

According to sources, Rs 5 lakh per candidate has been fixed as the limit on campaign expenditure.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) have announced that they will fight the election on their own party symbols.

INLD leader and former Haryana Assembly speaker Gopi Chand Gehlot made the announcement on Saturday, with chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar making the announcement on his party’s behalf on September 3.

Surprisingly, the Congress went back on its initial claims and decided not to contest the municipal polls on the party symbol. Expressing disappointment over the party’s decision, senior Congress leader Captain Ajay Yadav said the party will, however, support its candidates.

“It is important that a party must try to get support from the ground level. Winning the elections is important to us as a party. Though I disapprove of the decision of the party not to fight the polls on its party symbol, we will back our candidates to the hilt,” said Yadav. The process of filing nominations will take place between September 8 and September 13, with September 10 being an off on Sunday.

The nomination papers will be checked on September 14. The last date for withdrawal of nomination is September 15, between 11 am and 3 pm. After 3 pm, the district officials will start the process of allotting symbols and also set up the polling stations.
