New Delhi: A 70-year-old woman was murdered by her son and grandson allegedly over a property dispute in Northeast Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar area on Wednesday afternoon, the police said. The son has been arrested while the juvenile grandson has been apprehended, it said.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Maya Devi, who was strangulated to death by her 50-year-old son, identified as Rajbir, and grandson.

“On Wednesday, we received a police control room (PCR) call at around 3.20 pm at Jyoti Nagar police station informing about a woman found dead in Meet Nagar near Saboli Fatak. On reaching the spot, a woman, identified as Maya Devi, was found lying dead on her folding. The body was taken into possession and sent to GTB Hospital for post-mortem,” said deputy commissioner of police (Northeast) Atul Thakur.

Devi had four sons. She had a property dispute with her elder son Rajbir, who was suspected of committing the murder, the deputy commissioner of police added.

“Rajbir was the only person present in the house when the incident took place. He was taken into custody. Initially, he tried to mislead the police but later confessed to killing his mother with the help of his son. They chocked Devi to death and she had injury marks on her neck,” said Mr Thakur.

Interrogation revealed that Rajbir has a pending civil case related to the said property against his mother. She had disconnected the electricity of Rajbir’s living area and wanted him to vacate the portion.

“Hence, Rajbir and his juvenile son committed the murder. He worked as a mason. A case under Section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered and further investigation is underway,” said the DCP.
