Man arrested for abandoning baby in bushes

New Delhi: A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly abandoning an infant in the bushes near RK Khanna Tennis Stadium in Safdarjung area. On Wednesday, Delhi traffic police personnel saved the newborn girl from the bushes where some dogs were roaming.

The arrested accused was identified as Sajan Kumar, an X-ray technician at a lab in Lajpat Nagar. The accused was in a live-in relationship with a woman, who delivered the child. Subsequently, he dumped the infant owing to societal fear.

During investigation, the team analysed CCTV footages of the nearby areas. A tip off was received that someone had gone to the Safdarjung Hospital nursery and claimed that she was the mother of the abandoned infant.

The woman produced the documents related to the birth of the girl child. At her instance, accused Sajan Kumar was apprehended.

During interrogation, he confessed that he had abandoned the child. He also disclosed that about two years’ ago he worked at a hospital at Daryganj in Delhi, where he met the said woman. Subsequently, they got into a relationship.

DCP (South) Vijay Kumar said that fearing their parents might not accept their relationship, the duo did not disclose it to them. It was too late by the time they realized about the pregnancy. Since abortion was not possible, they decided to give birth to the baby in a private hospital.

The baby was born on Tuesday. Following the baby’s discharge from the hospital on Wednesday, the accused told the woman that one of his friends was in need of a baby and he was going to hand it over to them. He assured her that they would take care of the baby.

The woman agreed to the arrangement. However, the accused abandoned the baby, which was recovered by the on-duty cops when they heard it crying in the nearby bushes.
