New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) would examine whether the proposed alternate landfill sites at Sonia Vihar and Ghonda Gujran are located on the Yamuna floodplains.

The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by rebel Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kapil Mishra and others.

It didn’t issue a notice on their pleas, but directed them to file a brief note within a week mentioning the reasons for opposing the setting up of the two landfill sites.

The DDA had granted in-principle approval for these sites based on recommendations of CPCB and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute.

Besides Mr Mishra, AAP spokesperson D.K. Pandey and others have also sought directions to restrain the DDA from allotting an area of 130 acres at Sonia Vihar and a 50-acre plot at Ghonda Gujran to the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC)  for handling and processing waste.

These landfil sites were proposed as the existing landfill site at Ghazipur had saturated.
